Pluma is credited with playing a significant role in the resurgence of corridos due to his unique musical style, which is centered around corridos tumbados - sierreño corridos in the Sinaloa style with elements of latin urban music, particularly latin hip hop and reggaeton.

Pluma, who was raised in Guadalajara, started learning to play the guitar at the age of 15 by watching videos on YouTube. He began writing songs in a diary, acknowledging that his peers made fun of him for it. When he first started writing, he described how it became his therapy. He explained that he would write what he was feeling and some of it would rhyme; he kept practicing and became better through time.

The performer stated, "I've always listened to reggaeton, hip-hop, and rap, but I realized that my voice was made to sing corridos because I would hear them played around family all the time. My voice shined differently there than in any other genre."

As an early listener of hip-hop music, Pluma listed Canadian rapper Drake as his favorite artist, citing him as a reflection of growing up across borders. He has also mentioned the Weeknd, 21 Savage, Post Malone, Suicideboys, and Shoreline Mafia as musical influences. Pluma considered the late young Mexican singers Ariel Camacho and Valentín Elizalde as his primary influences for his sound.

26 singles from the 24-year-old performer, all of which he entered in 2023 alone, made up the artist's breakout year on the Billboard Hot 100. His groundbreaking album Génesis achieved the greatest position for a regional Mexican album at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. Most recently, he got his first Grammy for Génesis, which won the gramophone for best música mexicana album (including tejano).

Since gaining popularity in 2020, he has had several nominations and won several awards including Billboard Latin Music Awards New Artist of the Year, Regional Mexican Artist of the Year, Regional Mexican Song of the Year, Hot Latin Song of the Year, Streaming Song of the Year, Billboard Music Awards Top Latin Song, Grammy Awards Best Musica Mexicana Album, MTV Europe Music Awards Best New, to name a few.
