Joseph Glenn Herbert, or known by his professional name JO KOY, is a world-renowned Filipino-American comic. Known for his relatable stories and iconic impersonations of his mom, the man won the hearts of millions of viewers around the globe. To his name, he has six stand-up comedy specials across Comedy Central and Netflix. Some of his most notable ones include “Lights Out,” “In His Elements,” “Comin' in Hot,” and “Live from Seattle.” With millions of views for each one, it sure is clear that people can’t get enough of his laugh-out-loud shows. The energy is infectious, even through your screens!
Performing comedy for over three decades now, he sure is a natural performer. Mastering a sharp wit, striking punchlines, and tons of life experiences on stage, no one else does it quite like Jo Koy. Known to impersonate his mother at his shows, the man largely credits her as the reason why he’s performing for millions of people today. All in all, his shows aim to share his identity with Filipino roots, hoping to inspire his viewers.
“I wanted to make sure I give an identity to up-and-coming kids that are mixed race or Filipino just to have something that inspired them,” he told TODAY. “When I'm doing an impersonation of my mom or a joke about nursing, it gives us an identity that makes us proud, and that's what that was all about.”
In a San Francisco show last year, the man shared a bit of his vulnerable side, “My mom doesn’t have a voice right now,” he told the crowd, quoted via San Francisco Chronicle. “That’s the thing (the Koy family) is going through right now. So it makes me happy that I have all these specials out there, representing my mom.”
It was his mom that encouraged him to perform at school shows and right in front of their relatives growing up. Then Vegas coffee houses and scoring TV appearances, residencies, and performing stand-up specials & arenas to millions of people in total, he sure has come a long way all thanks to mom.
